Tyntesfield

Heritage Masterplanning

We were asked to devise a story-driven masterplan for this unique Victorian mansion and country estate, which the National Trust bought in 2002 complete with 60,000 artefacts. Tyntesfield comprises a uniquely untouched time capsule of 100 years of country house living.

We devised an approach to storytelling in the house and across the landscape that would highlight Tyntesfield’s powerful and emotional atmosphere. By bringing alive the people as well as the artefacts, visitors were given the unique sensation of going back in time to a lost, Victorian past and the rise and decline of a God-fearing family.

We also designed a new Welcome piece, using a talented young illustrator, in which two rooms in the house are recreated to capture two key moments in the house’s history: the Library which expresses the house at the height of its story (in the 1870’s) and the kitchen which expresses the house in decline (in the 1950’s).

The new Welcome centre opened in 2010.
